A: What are you working on so seriously?
「何を真剣にやっているの？」
B: I’m preparing the sales report. This time, I need to organize data by region, so it’s a bit challenging. Oh, there are so many repeating digits after the decimal point in 33.33333.
「営業報告を作っているんだけど、今回は地域別のデータを整理しなければいけないので、少し大変なんだよ。あー、小数点以下の位に33.33333と繰り返し数字がたくさん並んじゃったな。」
A: You should round it off.
「四捨五入しておかなければね。」
round it off の off は、あってもなくても四捨五入の意味ですね。round it off とすると、完了するというニュアンスが入るかと思います。
B: That sounds like a hassle. 「それは面倒くさいな。」
A: What are you talking about? It’s easy. Just use the ROUND function, and you can fix it right away.
「何言っているの。簡単だよ。ROUND関数を使って、すぐに直せるわよ。」
B: I’m not familiar with Excel. What should I do?
「Excelよくわからないんだ。どうしたらいいの？」
A: Okay, now you can see 33.33333 in cell D9, right? It wouldn’t add any value to show such a long digits. Let’s make it 33.33. Type “=round”, open a parentheses, then reference the cell with the number you want to change, put a comma, add “2”, and close the parentheses.
「わかったわ。今、D9に33.33333とあるわよね。そんなに桁を表示しても意味がないから、33.33にしておきましょう。＝roundとタイプして、かっこして、変更したい数値のセルを参照して、コンマ、そして、2として、かっこを閉じる。」
具体的に表示すると、「 =round(D9,2) 」となるのね。
B: Wow, that’s impressive. This is really handy.
「おー、すごい。これは便利だね。」
A: Of course. I chose ‘2’ because I wanted to display up to two decimal places. For instance, if you wish to show up to four decimal places, use ‘4’. By the way, let me explain rounding down and rounding up, and remember these terms. Instead of using ‘ROUND,’ simply use ‘ROUNDDOWN’ for rounding down and ‘ROUNDUP’ for rounding up.
「当然よ。小数点以下2位まで表示したかったから、２にしたのよ。たとえば、4位まで表示たいときは４とするのよ。ついでに、切り捨てと切り上げも教えておくから、覚えておいてね。roundを使う代わりに、切り捨ては、rounddown、切り上げは、roundupにすればいいだけよ。」
B: Got it. This seems easy to remember.
「了解。これは覚えやすいね。」
A: Also, when you want the absolute value, use “abs()”.
「あと、絶対値をだしたいときは、abs()でからね。」
B: Not “abc”, but “abs”, got it. 「abcではなく、absね。」
A: Exactly, “abs” stands for “absolute”.
「はい、absolute（絶対的な）の略ね。」
